Attack on painting – Four Italian women now risk five years in prison

Date:

Four young women have been arrested in Italy for attacking Vincent van Gogh’s painting The Sower with Pea Soup. You risk up to five years in prison if liquid enters the statue.

The four women, about 20 years old, bought tickets for the Van Gogh exhibition in the Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome on Friday. There they threw pea soup at the painting “The Sower”. It is not yet clear where they hid the cans.

The young women have since been reported. The same goes for a photographer who filmed the attack. According to Italian media, the artwork could be seen behind glass and was undamaged. However, if liquid has penetrated the painting, the climate activists risk up to five years in prison.

The activists belong to the ‘Last Generation’ group, which, for example, lay down on a bypass in Rome and blocked traffic for hours in this way. The group is also active in Vienna, among others. Their attack on Van Gogh’s painting in Rome is part of a series of actions against famous works of art.

Meloni: “Pure vandalism”
While the action group spoke of a “desperate and scientifically justified outcry” and announced further “non-violent direct actions”, the Italian prime minister was criticized. Giorgia Meloni described the attack as “pure vandalism unrelated to environmental protection.” This way you don’t defend an ideal, you just damage it.
