An investigator believes the fire in the basement of a high-rise building in the Elisabeth suburb on July 17 could have turned into an inferno. A resident of the house has now been investigated as a suspected perpetrator.
Two fires started in the waste room, several fire doors were open, thick smoke and eight people were injured. The day after the fire in Salzburg’s Fanny-von-Lehnert-Strasse, experienced fire investigator Walter Kittel was sure: “The procedure was very focused. This is a new quality of arson for me. I’ve never experienced anything like it!”
Alleged perpetrator identified
Now, Salzburg police detectives have been able to investigate a 26-year-old resident as a suspected perpetrator. The woman was reported to the Salzburg prosecutor’s office for attempted arson and multiple property damage. During police interrogation, she vehemently denied the allegations. A total of eight people were injured in the act and handed over to emergency services. Two of them had to be admitted to the University Hospital of Salzburg with smoke inhalation.
The house in question was difficult terrain for the fire service because of its design, according to Kittel at the time. “Fortunately, the professional fire brigade was on the scene so quickly. Due to the heavy smoke development, the fire also ran out of oxygen, which significantly slowed down the spread of the fire,” the fire researcher summed up at the time.
