AGES has confirmed an outbreak of avian influenza in Styria: the avian influenza virus, subtype H5N1, was detected in several animals at a hobby farm in the Graz-Umwelt district.
The subtype in question is highly pathogenic to birds and often causes many deaths, especially in domestic poultry flocks. On the affected farm, chickens and geese were affected by the infection. “The cause of the release is currently being investigated,” AGES said on Wednesday.
In the current epidemic situation, diseases after infection with H5N1 in Europe have not yet been detected in humans. A protection zone and a surveillance zone will be established around the excavation site. In these zones, poultry farms are checked by official veterinarians.
