According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine is currently not realistic. “At this point, a global ceasefire in Ukraine does not seem possible,” he said at a news conference in New York on Wednesday. “That was our appeal for humanitarian reasons, but it doesn’t seem possible.”
The UN chief had previously instructed his emergency aid coordinator, Martin Griffiths, to investigate the possibility of a “humanitarian ceasefire” in the war in Ukraine. Griffiths then traveled to Moscow and Kiev for discussions.
Guterres did not want to speak of genocide
When asked about the atrocities in Ukraine, Guterres declined to speak of genocide. “We are deeply concerned about the dramatic impact of the conflict in this regard, but we leave it to the judicial authorities relevant in this regard to determine whether a genocidal situation exists.”
US President Joe Biden, among others, had previously accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of “genocide” in view of the atrocities in Ukraine.
