“Krone” in the district – only eight showers and toilets for 300 asylum seekers

Date:

These are the first photos of the large asylum districts in Frankenburg in Upper Austria, which are currently under criticism. And they show that the asylum seekers do not exactly live in four-star hotels, on the contrary. Because there are 300 young men crammed together in a hall and the hygienic conditions are disastrous.

Sheets and plastic sheeting hang around the beds, which are tightly packed together as a privacy screen. There are only eight showers and eight toilets for about 300 “residents” of the asylum seekers’ center in Frankenburg am Hausruck – there are jerry cans with water at the toilet. Laundry is lying and hanging everywhere. Men of different nationalities form small groups, there are no opportunities to withdraw.

Even from the outside, anyone can see into the old factory building, where the specifications say migrants are supposed to stay for up to two weeks – some say they’ve been there for months. The “Krone” was given exclusive insights into the federal district, against whose size the place now stands.

The number of documents should be reduced
“We had planned a protest march two weeks ago, but postponed it because the mayor has now become active,” says initiator Martin Kaser (39), who wants to achieve with his comrades-in-arms that the number of occupants in the old factory buildings is reduced to a maximum 100 – as promised by the federal government in 2015 – will be reduced. Up to 300 or even more asylum seekers are currently crammed here.

“This has become unbearable for the people of Frankenburg and also for the people in the hall,” says Kaser, who now wants to have a legal check whether the housing in the company building is covered at all. After the end of the ongoing petition for a reduction in the number of receipts, a demonstration will be held with the representatives of the municipality.

“Size Is Unreasonable”
“We want to help the refugees, but the size of the neighborhood is unacceptable. Both for the people inside and for the population of Frankenburg,” says Ortwin Maritsch from Frankenburg, who is clearly in favor of reducing the number of documents – also to asylum seekers to lead a dignified life. And it is hoped that there will be fewer young men “hanging around” in the city – although there have not yet been any serious incidents, “everyone who has to go through 20 men just has a sick feeling”.

Two additional shower containers will arrive in Frankenburg in the coming days and a new kitchen for the asylum seekers is also planned.
