Almost a year after the deadly car attack on a Christmas parade in the US state of Wisconsin, the perpetrator has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. A court in the city of Waukesha handed down the verdict on Wednesday (local time) after the 40-year-old was found guilty of six counts of murder in October.
Darrell Brooks drove his SUV into a Christmas parade on November 21, 2021 in the city of Waukesha, home to 70,000 people. Six people were killed and dozens more injured. According to his family, the man, who has been arrested repeatedly for violent crimes in the past, suffers from psychological problems.
“Frankly, you deserve it,” Presiding Judge Jennifer Dorow said at the sentencing hearing. Brooks rammed a total of 68 people with his car. “There are so many complicating factors that it’s really hard to keep track of them,” Dorow continued. These included a “complete disregard for the lives of others”, Brooks’ criminal record and his “complete lack of remorse”.
