The Australian government has asked Russia to extradite the men sentenced to life imprisonment for downing flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine. Thursday’s ruling shows that Russia is responsible for the downing, Secretary of State Penny Wong said Friday. “No evasion, concealment or disinformation” could dispel this fact.
Moscow should extradite the three men to face trial for their “heinous crimes.” “We say to Russia: The world knows you harbor killers — and that says something about you, Mr. Putin,” Wong told ABC Television.
Missile from Russian stocks
When the passenger plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, all 298 people on board were killed, including 196 Dutch citizens. In the verdict announced on Thursday, the court found it proven that the plane had been shot down by a BUK-type surface-to-air missile from a Russian military base in Kursk.
The missile was allegedly fired from a field in an area of eastern Ukraine controlled by the self-proclaimed pro-Russian Donetsk People’s Republic.
