Ukraine has again rejected proposals to negotiate with Russia. “When you take the initiative on the battlefield, it’s a bit bizarre to get suggestions like, ‘You can’t achieve everything by military means, you have to negotiate,'” said Ukraine’s presidential aide Mykhailo Podoliak. This would mean that “the country that regains its territory must surrender to the country that loses”.
US media recently reported that senior US officials were increasingly urging Ukraine to consider negotiating with Russia.
Kiev urges withdrawal of Russian troops
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has so far rejected such proposals without prior withdrawal of Russian troops from all over Ukraine. US Chief of Staff Mark Milley recently said that a military victory is unlikely to be won by military means.
According to Podoliak, Moscow has not yet made a “direct proposal” to Kiev for peace talks. Instead, Russia prefers to transfer them through intermediaries and broker a ceasefire.
According to Kiev, Moscow is playing for time
Kiev sees such talks as maneuvers by Moscow to buy time and prepare a new offensive. “Russia does not want negotiations. Russia is conducting a communication campaign called ‘negotiations’, Podoliak told AFP.
Ukraine launched a counter-offensive in late August. Since then, the Ukrainian army has recaptured some areas from Russia, including the strategically important regional capital of Kherson in the south of the country. Russia has recently repeatedly attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. There were repeated power outages in many parts of the country.
Kiev: More than 8,300 civilians killed since the start of the war
Since the beginning of the Russian offensive war in Ukraine on February 24, more than 8,300 civilians, including 437 children, have been killed. So says Ukrainian Attorney General Andriy Kostin, according to a report on the Internet portal “Unian” on Sunday. More than 11,000 people were injured. According to Kostin, the real number of victims is probably higher because the Ukrainian authorities still have no access to some Russian-held areas.
