Barked for days – Abandoned dog rescued by police

A dog that had been barking and howling for days was rescued from an apartment in Linz on Sunday. The tenant of an apartment building in the Neue Heimat district had called the police after, according to her, the four-legged friend had been barking and screaming continuously since Friday. A first look through the window confirmed that the dog was apparently in bad shape and panting from thirst, police said in a press release.

The light was on in the extremely sparsely furnished apartment, as seen from the outside through the lowered blinds. The dog was wearing a harness and leash, but was able to move freely. From the outside it could already be seen that he had urinated in the apartment and, among other things, had scratched the plaster to a depth of two centimeters, which, according to the police report, indicated that he was under-challenged due to a lack of exercise. In the kitchen there was an empty bowl, in the garden there were two more bowls with wet to moldy food that the animal could not reach.

The animal’s 32-year-old owner could not be reached by phone at first, but then showed up at the apartment. She didn’t understand the usefulness of the police and professional firefighters and the excitement about her four-legged friend. According to her statement, she was only gone for a day. The official veterinarian of the Veterinary Service of the Linz Magistrate ordered the dog to be taken away and taken to the animal shelter in Linz.
