The spokesman for the Potsdam public prosecutor, Sebastian Thiele, confirmed this on Monday. Under investigation for public property damage. According to Thiele, this requires a complex procedure. For example, experts must assess the damage to the painting’s frame and in the museum. In addition, the substance that has been sprayed on the painting is analyzed.

Attack with mashed potatoes
On October 23, a woman and a man spilled a liquid on Claude Monet’s painting “Grainstacks” in the Potsdam Museum. According to the Last Generation group, which claimed responsibility for the attack, it was mashed potatoes. Thanks to glaze and a special felt strip, the painting is not damaged. However, the frame of the work and the ceiling of the room were damaged.

The “last generation” is demanding more effective measures against climate change from politicians and is currently attracting attention with campaigns. For example, at the Leopold Museum in Vienna, members doused Gustav Klimt’s painting “Death and Life” with black paint. In addition, they stick to pictures or streets in Austria and Europe.
