Attacks on cities – Ukraine reports heavy fighting in Donbass

Date:

According to information from Kiev, Ukrainian and Russian troops are currently fighting each other in the Donbass, in eastern Ukraine. Russia is focusing its attacks on the cities of Avdiivka and Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, the Ukrainian General Staff said Tuesday night. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s citizens may have to brace for prolonged power outages due to damaged infrastructure.

Elsewhere, the General Staff spoke of an “active defense” of the Russian troops – apparently the Ukrainians are attacking there. The places Kupjansk, Lyman, Novopavliwka and Zaporischschja were mentioned. The Russian soldiers would defend themselves with tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery, it was said.

Russians reinforce defenses on Dnipro banks
The information provided by the Ukrainian military was initially not independently verifiable. According to the official report, the Russian army in southern Ukraine is strengthening its defense lines on the southern bank of the Dnipro River, the German news agency dpa reports.

According to unofficial information, the Ukrainian artillery fired their long-range artillery in this area in the direction of Crimea. Meanwhile, Russian military bloggers reported on a successful Russian advance on the town of Marjinka near Donetsk.

Ukrainians should be prepared for long-term power outages
With infrastructure damaged by Russian missile strikes, Ukrainians are likely to face prolonged blackouts. “Most likely until at least the end of March,” says the head of the private energy supplier Yasno. “Have a supply of warm clothes and blankets,” he recommends.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the damaged power grid in the country remains unstable. On Monday, we not only had planned shutdowns, but also unplanned power outages, he said in his evening video address. Consumption is greater than electricity production.

“The system damage to our energy sector from the Russian terror attacks is so great that all our citizens and businesses have to be very economical and spread consumption over the hours of the day,” Zelenskyy said. He called on regional and municipal administrations to continue to encourage citizens to save electricity. Electricity must also be saved in public areas.
