The law for attacks on rescue workers was tightened on 1 January 2020 after a number of incidents. Now a 57-year-old has been convicted of pushing and dragging a young Red Cross employee over the stairs in an East Tyrolean apartment building. The woman appealed, ranting several times about the victim’s “lies.”
The young Red Cross employee called in August to become a member or to receive a donation from the house parties approached for this purpose. This apparently led to a conflict with the suspect (57), in which the descriptions are diametrically opposed: the victim claimed to have been pushed down the stairs by the angry woman and then grabbed by the collar and dragged outside.
The defendant, on the other hand, railed against the pending trial that this was a lie. Her mother (91), who witnessed via video from East Tyrol, did not see the incident in the stairwell. It was statement against statement.
Fallen yourself?
“You claim that he threw himself down the stairs, I just don’t believe you,” the judge justified the verdict (bodily harm). And the prosecutor also considered the descriptions of the 57-year-olds a fairy tale, according to which the Red Cross collector allegedly inflicted his injuries when he deliberately fell down the stairs and then “flips” forward of the house.
Because the East Tyrolean only had a low income and was not guilty of a criminal offense, the partial fine amounted to 800 euros. This corresponds to a prison sentence of three months and ten days. The penalty for such offenses is now up to two years.
