Missile Systems and Co – Kremlin wants to expand infrastructure for nuclear weapons

Date:

The Kremlin wants to work on its nuclear weapons and associated infrastructure in the coming year. Facilities are planned to house new missile systems. With nearly 6,000 nuclear warheads, Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world.

The combat capability of the missile units should be improved by 2023, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on television on Wednesday. The Russian government has already placed the annexed territories in eastern and southern Ukraine under its nuclear shield. The Kremlin has also threatened to defend its “territorial integrity” by any means at its disposal if necessary. This includes nuclear weapons.

US warns of consequences
So far there are no reports of actual use. The US government has once again warned Russian leaders of the consequences. Both countries should have discussed the future of the New Start treaty, which limits the number of strategic nuclear weapons, in Cairo this week. However, Moscow canceled its participation shortly before the meeting. The US would be anti-Russian anyway and would try to manipulate the treaty to their advantage.

Controls of the armory areas
The talks should be about resuming cross-checks on nuclear arsenals interrupted by the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Strategic nuclear weapons that the treaty would limit include ICBMs, submarine-launched missiles, and nuclear-armed fighter jets. Russia has nearly 6,000 nuclear warheads, making it the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. The New Start Treaty was signed in 2010 and will officially expire in 2026.
