Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is calling on Europe to come to a common line on how to deal with the repatriation of migrants. At the same time, she called on the EU to work more closely with the migrants’ countries of origin. “We Italians cannot handle an influx of unmanageable proportions alone,” Meloni said in a speech at the Med Dialogues summit in Rome.
“Europe urgently needs to create a framework for multilateral cooperation and vigorously combat illegal flows,” Meloni said. An indispensable building block for this is the “Europeanization” in dealing with returns.
“We call on the European Union to resume cooperation on migration policy with its partners in Africa and the Mediterranean, who need to be more involved in the fight against human trafficking,” said Meloni.
Stabilization of Libya as the main goal
The full stabilization of Libya is one of the most urgent foreign policy priorities, also because of its impact on migration. “Only a Libya-led stabilization process with the support of the UN can lead to a solution,” the prime minister said.
Italy and its government are determined to strengthen their role in the Mediterranean. We are aware that only by creating an area of shared prosperity will we be able to effectively address the many disruptive challenges – from health to climate change,” Meloni stated.
