Numerous businessmen in Iranian cities closed their shops on Monday, apparently in response to the protest movement’s call for a three-day general strike. The 380,000-follower 1500tasvir Twitter account, which closely follows the protests, showed videos of closed shops in inner cities, such as the bazaar in the capital Tehran and other cities such as Karaj, Isfahan and Shiraz.
Reuters was initially unable to independently confirm this. However, witnesses reported a massive presence of the Basij militia in the center of Tehran. The semi-official Fars news agency reported that a jewelry store owned by former footballer and Bayern Munich player Ali Daei had been closed by authorities after they announced it would remain closed for the three-day general strike.
strike after protests
1500tasvir also included images of smaller towns such as Bojnord, Kerman, Sabzevar, Ilam and Ardabil, also with their shops closed. The Kurdish-Iranian human rights organization Hengaw said 19 cities in western Iran, where most of the country’s Kurds live, have joined the strike.
The protests were sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The Kurd died in police custody on September 16. The so-called moral police had arrested her for allegedly wearing her headscarf incorrectly. Since then, hundreds of people have been killed in the protests.
Deputy Police was disbanded
According to Attorney General Mohammed Jafar Montazeri, the vice squad has since been disbanded, apparently to prevent further protests. However, the judicial authority will continue to deal with this societal challenge, the daily “Shargh” quoted the Montazeri on Sunday. The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for the vice squad, but initially declined to comment.
