Indonesia’s parliament has passed sweeping reforms to the penal code, including a ban on extramarital sex, apostasy and insults against the president.

The reform has been the subject of debate for decades and sparked mass protests in the most Muslim country in the world with a liberal tradition.

Among the most criticized clauses are the prohibition of extramarital sex in any form with up to one year in prison, as well as punishing insulting the president with up to three years in prison, in addition to prohibiting apostasy. .

Once approved, there will be a period of “about two years” during which the reform can be challenged in the country’s constitutional court, as explained by Alif Nurwidiastomi, of Indonesia’s Legal Aid Foundation, to EFE.

The changes will affect both the Indonesian population and foreigners living in the country, as well as tourists.

The reform has sparked protests since it was attempted to be passed in 2019, when it was paralyzed after massive demonstrations. Dozens of people have been demonstrating against him in front of the parliament in Jakarta since yesterday.
