Blood transfusion dispute – New Zealand: Vaccination opponents lose custody

Date:

New Zealand’s Supreme Court has taken temporary custody of a four-month-old baby in a dispute over life-saving heart surgery. His parents had opposed the procedure as long as there is no guarantee that the child will receive blood from donors who have not been vaccinated against the corona virus. Auckland court has found six-month-old “Baby W.” taken into pre-trial detention to allow the operation against the wishes of the anti-vaccination couple.

“The decisive question is whether the proposed treatment is in the best interests of the child,” the court said on Wednesday. The child is now under court medical custody until the “completion of his surgery” and his recovery by the end of January at the latest. For the rest, the parents retain custody rights. In addition, they would be regularly informed about the course of the treatment and the condition of the baby, according to the verdict.

Health authority: ‘Difficult situation for everyone’
New Zealand Health Authority spokesman Mike Shepherd said it was a “difficult situation for everyone involved”. The decision to make such an application to the court is always taken “with due regard for the best interests of the child”.

Unvaccinated donors went unheard of
The baby is being treated at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland. About 150 anti-vaccine protesters demonstrated outside the courthouse on Tuesday in support of the baby’s parents. According to one supporter, numerous unvaccinated people had agreed to help the child.
