While most Austrians are probably in the midst of Christmas stress right now, it would actually be a good time to take a deep breath and think about holiday planning for the year ahead. Because many popular window days are probably already taken by colleagues – but there is still a good time to secure as many days off in a row as possible.
With its ‘holiday planner’, the employer assessment platform kununu.com has now looked at how you can get as much free time as possible in 2023 with as few vacation days as possible. If you ideally take advantage of the national holidays, you get a total of 63 work-free days with 25 vacation days – saving you ten vacation days.
Start the new year refreshed
The first opportunity is exactly during the Christmas holidays. Although Christmas and New Years largely fall on a weekend this year, thanks to Saint Stephen’s Day (December 26), you can still stay at home for a whole week with four days of vacation. That would also be a good opportunity to reduce unused vacation entitlements.
With smart planning, you can once again look forward to plenty of free time at Easter. So if you want to enjoy the Easter holidays, you can (like every year) have four days off during the week of Easter Monday (April 10) – so you get nine days off in a row.
Vacations are quite cheap
In general, next year’s holidays will be somewhat cheaper: May in particular offers a number of opportunities for smart planning. Both May 1 (Monday) and Ascension Day (Thursday, May 18) fall on a weekday in 2023 – plus Whit Monday (May 29).
So here again it makes sense to take the window day off, or again the option to get the whole week off with four vacation days each.
Coveted bridging days also in summer
A large number of days off can then be picked up in June. Due to Whit Monday (May 29) and Corpus Christi (June 8), you can get two weeks of Whitsun vacation with only eight vacation days. In August, Ascension Day (August 15) offers a good opportunity to save up a day off.
Longer break possible in autumn
In October things get exciting again: the national holiday (October 26) falls on a Thursday, which means that a holiday ends in a long weekend. But this could also be extended again, because the following week it is All Saints’ Day again (Wednesday, November 1). With four vacation days you get nine days off – with eight days you even get 16 days off.
Christmas holidays fall almost perfectly
Finally, the Christmas holidays in 2023 fall almost perfectly. The Marian Reception automatically extends the first weekend of December (December 8 falls on a Friday). And at the end of the year, with just three vacation days before Christmas and New Years, you can secure ten days in a row.
