In the trial of the suspected Islamist-motivated terrorist attack in Nice six and a half years ago that killed 86 people, the court sentenced two defendants to 18 years in prison for membership of a terrorist organization. Judge Laurent Raviot said on Tuesday evening at the Palais de Justice in Paris that the two had given the killer moral and material support and had inspired him.
On July 14, 2016, the French National Day, Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel drove a heavy truck into a crowd on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. He also shot people. In the end, 86 people died and more than 200 people were injured. The perpetrator was shot dead after the crime.
Jihadism as a “clear source of inspiration”
The terrorist militia Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the court, this alleged confession was opportunistic despite the perpetrator’s interest in jihadism. A connection with a terrorist organization was not found, but a clear inspiration from jihadism.
The court sentenced the man who was given the weapon used in the attack to 12 years. The other five suspects in the trial, who were also involved in acquiring a weapon, were said to have served between two and eight years in prison.
