60-year-old driver may have lost control of the wheel due to black ice in Ennshafen and drove across the quay wall. The vehicle sank about three meters into the water.
A terrible tragedy happened early Wednesday evening during a taxi ride in Enns. The driver, a 60-year-old resident, was traveling with a passenger – a sailor – to a ship anchored in Ennshafen. The two spoke while driving.
Passenger swam to shore
In the Hafenstraße, the taxi driver lost control of the steering wheel during a left turn, probably due to black ice, and fell straight over the quay wall into the harbor basin. The passenger in the back seat was just able to free himself from the wreckage and swim to shore. He survived the accident with hypothermia but unharmed.
Helplessly drowned
The driver must have drowned helplessly. “The taxi was about ten feet deep in the water with the tires up and the lights on,” said FF operations manager Alfred Stummer. Divers from the fire department attached chains to the car, which was then hoisted ashore with a crane. The driver could not be resuscitated. The next of kin had to be cared for by the crisis intervention team.
