Just a few days ago, a man was arrested in Linz who was part of a gang of scammers. The trick: the crooks pose on the phone as detectives and persuade the mostly elderly victims to hand over money and jewelry to an alleged cop so they can’t be stolen.
Call at 11 p.m.
What is new is that the 82-year-old victim was not called until around 11 p.m. Not an isolated case, as Gerald Sakoparnig, head of the fraud department of the state investigation, confirms to “Krone”. “This seems to be a new twist. In the past, calls were always made during the day. Now the calls often come late at night, as in the case of the 82-year-old woman,” says Sakoparnig,
Scammers wake victims from their sleep
And he also has an explanation for this: “The call seems more dramatic and the care more urgent,” says the fraud hunter. The elderly also tend to go to bed earlier and be awakened by the call, which often makes the game easier for scammers.
In the case of the 82-year-old from Linz, however, this plan did not work out. The woman informed the police about the place and time of the transfer, and the 20-year-old perpetrator was caught.
