Despite the relaxation in many areas, the mask rules in schools and universities will remain largely in force for the time being. Even after the Easter holidays, mouth and nose protection (up to the lower grades) or an FFP2 mask (upper grades, vaccinated/rehabilitated teachers) must be worn in schools outside the classrooms or study rooms. Unvaccinated and unrecovered teachers everywhere will need an FFP2 mask. Even after Easter, the FFP2 mask requirement will remain in force at almost all universities.
The general rules do not apply to both schools and universities, but their own legal basis with the Covid-19 School Ordinance or the Covid-19 University Act. For the school sector, the Minister of Education draws up the Corona requirements, in the university sector the institution concerned does this itself.
Mask may be removed in class
The Ministry of Education does not want to change the current mask rules for the school for the time being. Usually the students no longer need the masks – they are no longer required in class or during class break. However, they should be worn in the hallway or dining room (except when eating). The new requirements that are issued shortly before the holiday will only apply from 19 April in any case. In addition to the unchanged mask regulation, they also provide for a mandatory PCR test per week (previously a minimum of two). There are only antigen tests when necessary, ie mainly after positive cases in the classroom.
Almost all universities want to keep the FFP2 mask requirement
It is a bit more confusing at the universities, as each university regulates its own corona requirements. Here the Easter holidays usually end on April 24. At some universities, the G-rules have only recently expired, others won’t waive them until next week, and at some the 3G requirement has even been extended until the end of April. But almost everyone wants to keep the FFP2 mask requirement, at least for now – often throughout the building, at some institutions only in the lecture hall/laboratory or during exams. The Graz University of Music has demanded that the mask be mandatory in all rooms as soon as a person present requests it. The Technical University (TU) Graz, on the other hand, has announced that it will lift all corona restrictions, including the obligation to wear a face mask, from April 25.
