German economist Holger Bonin will be the new head of the Vienna Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS). The IHS board of directors decided to start negotiations with Bonin to replace the scientific director, it said on Tuesday. The main post has been vacant for almost two years now.
Bonin is currently research director of the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn and teaches as a professor of economics with a focus on labor market and social policy at the University of Kassel. Bonin succeeds Neusser, who has served as the head of the IHS on an interim basis since May 2022, after negotiations are concluded.
The IHS has been without a permanent boss since January 2021, when Martin Kocher became Minister of Labor for the ÖVP. The IHS first advertised the main station in mid-February 2021. When Guntram Wolff also declined after Lars Feld, the IHS Board of Trustees decided to advertise again this year.
