A migrant was killed by a bullet on Saturday evening during a firefight on the Greek-Turkish border river Evros. This was announced by the Greek police on Sunday. Greek border guards used a night vision camera to determine that a dinghy left the Turkish side of the river.
They asked the detainees over the loudspeaker to return to Turkey. When individual shots and then salvos from the Turkish side were fired in an unknown direction, Greek border guards took cover and fired warning shots into the air, police said.
2000 euros paid for crossing to tugboat
Four migrants were thus able to reach the Greek coast. Greek police discovered the body of a woman in the river water. She had a gunshot wound to her chest. The body must be forensically examined. According to the police, the migrants stated that they paid a gang of smugglers in Istanbul €2,000 per person for the crossing to Greece and thus to the EU. It was initially unclear from which countries the migrants came.
Greece and the EU keep a close eye on the border
One of the routes used by smugglers to take migrants from Turkey to Greece and thus to the EU is along the border river Evros. The Greek border guards and the European border security agency Frontex are keeping a close eye on the region. In addition, Greece has placed kilometer-long border fences in many places. More than 1,000 migrants have crossed the border since the beginning of the year, according to the UN refugee agency. In 2021, more than 4,800 people entered the country illegally, in 2020 there were almost 6,000.
