Drug shortage: Only after a four-hour odyssey is there an acute drug – but only in Lower Austria…
There are 500 medicines that are currently not (or only partially) available in Austria. 500! A number – doesn’t sound particularly spectacular. Unless you suddenly need an antibiotic and have no chance of getting it in Vienna.
Rejected at four pharmacies
“Krone” reporter Sandra Ramsauer reports on her experience: “Imagine your head feels like it’s encased in a vacuum. Words don’t reach the ear canals because they’re preoccupied with sharp pains. My ENT doctor diagnosed a middle ear infection. The antibiotic amoxicillin helps!”
Then the pharmacy odyssey began in Vienna. “7. Neighborhood: None. Next address Döbling: The pharmacist looks at the prescription and says: ‘No chance, maybe in two weeks.’ The same scenario in pharmacy three in the 19th and at number four (again in the 7th arrondissement). At the end of the day, the search for antibiotics in Mautern (Lower Austria) ended. Here was the medicine.”
The president of the Viennese Chamber of Pharmacy is aware of the precarious pharmaceutical situation. But Philipp Saiko thinks the situation is under control. This story proves otherwise.
