He blew up a police station and shot dead a young police officer. However, Georg Brunnbauer (69) was not insightful. On the contrary, even behind bars he kept the judiciary busy.
He was probably one of the longest serving “life sentences” in Austria: we are talking about gendarme killer Georg Brunnbauer (69) from Ansfelden (Upper Austria), who has now died in Wels. In 1992, he blew up the gendarmerie station in his hometown, shot an officer and two others in Rutzing. A look at the court records reveals that Brunnbauer remained a perpetual troublemaker even behind bars – there are 192 file notes!
The prisoner, who never pleaded guilty or even showed remorse, continued to write petitions to have his trial reopened or paroled. And he also complained while on tour when he was denied benefits like exit.
Request again and again
In response to a request from “Krone”, the Krems Regional Court reported: “The prisoner was last held in Stein Prison since March 2018, before that he was housed in Garsten Prison. He applied for parole in 2018, 2019 and 2021.”

Brunnbauer also tried his luck in Garsten every year between 2009 and 2017. With the decision of the Krems Regional Court on September 28, 2022, Brunnbauer was conditionally discharged after obtaining an expert opinion with numerous conditions. The conditions concerned assisted living, approach and contact bans, alcohol bans and probationary period. “It should also be mentioned that the prisoner was only fit for prison to a limited extent for health reasons,” said the Krems court. Brunnbauer died on December 2 in Wels.
