Record start – “Neighbors in Need”: 95 million euros raised for Ukraine

Date:

Russia’s attack on Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, brought a lot of work to the “Neighbours in Need” initiative, making it the initiative’s most successful start of a relief effort. The ORF launched the appeal for help on the same day in February. Since then, more than 95 million euros in donations have been raised in the first ten months. However, the end of the war and thus of the ‘Aid for Ukraine’ campaign is not yet in sight.

The need in Ukraine and the refugees from the Eastern European country is great.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR, more than 16.3 million people left Ukraine in December and 7.8 million fled to other countries. In addition, there are at least 6.5 million internally displaced persons within the country.

This necessitated extensive relief efforts, and ‘Neighbors in Need’ – under whose umbrella the aid organizations Caritas, Red Cross, Care, Diakonie, Volkshilfe, aid organization, Arbeitersamariterbund and Malteser have come together – were intensively involved.

The government doubled the donated amount
With the 95 million – of which 41.96 million comes from the doubling of the federal government – 52 aid projects with a budget of 59.2 million euros have been carried out since the end of February. 13 have already been completed, these concerned emergency aid at the start of the war. Some of these were continued through follow-up projects or moved to other regions.

Currently 39 projects are being implemented
39 projects are currently in progress, three more are about to be decided, according to “Neighbours in Need”. 17 of these projects mainly concern winter aid. This concerns, for example, securing the energy supply, which is particularly the target of Russian attacks. The partner organizations have so far purchased 479 generators, most of which are already in use. Further purchases are currently being planned.

More than 600,000 people benefited from “Neighbours in Need” aid projects: 530,000 in Ukraine itself, 45,000 in the Republic of Moldova, 17,000 in Romania and 8,000 in Poland.
