In most cases, anyone caught in an avalanche caused it themselves. In an incident on Stefanitag in Tyrol’s Kühtai, on the other hand, a descending touring ski caused a piece of snow that hit a man during the ascent.
Around 1:00 p.m., two tour groups (two times three locals each) were out independently in the Grießkogel area in the open ski area. A 49-year-old rode through the valley and ahead of his group. He crossed the northern slope about 150 meters below the top of the Vorderen Grießkogel. A slab avalanche broke loose about 50 to 80 meters above him.
Avalanche hit another group
While the descending group of three was not caught by the avalanche, a 56-year-old from the ascending tour group was dragged along by the medium snow shelf and partially buried, police reported.
Very lucky in the event of a breakdown: with the help of the 49-year-old, the resident was able to free himself unharmed from the snow masses. Other people were not injured.
