Multiple wildfires kept firefighters in northern Italy in suspense over the Easter weekend. A fire that broke out on Lake Maggiore on Friday evening was brought under control by Easter Sunday, but other fires in the Lombardy region, for example in the provinces of Brescia, Lecco on Lake Como or Sondrio, were favored and fueled time and again by the dry soil and plants as well as the wind, said the fire brigade.
Several families had to leave their homes in the Varese region on Saturday. Two helicopters and three fire-fighting aircraft have been deployed on the border between the regions of Lombardy and Piemonte, the fire service reported. The fire was brought under control shortly before Saturday afternoon, according to local TV station Rete55. Several hectares were victims of the flames.
The cause of the fire was initially unknown. There must be no injuries. Recently, there have also been larger forest fires on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore, favored in part by the remarkably dry conditions. Areas in the Swiss canton of Ticino were affected.
Meanwhile, on Sunday there was a fire in Liguria and Piemonte, near the cities of Imperia and Savona. The troops were supported by helicopters and special fire-fighting aircraft, the so-called Canadair aircraft. Dozens of people had to be rescued from the fires.
