China is preparing for another rural covid outbreak

The authorities have indicated that the government intends to accelerate the production of medicines against the corona virus

Chinese authorities have taken a series of measures to deal with a new coronavirus outbreak in rural areas as major cities manage to reduce the number of infections. Experts have produced a range of forecasts based on the history of infections in rural areas, where areas such as Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei have passed the peak of infections.

Peng Jie, an infectious disease specialist at Nanfang Hospital in Guangzhou, told the Nanfang newspaper on Monday that hospital visits have increased significantly. “The next spike could be people with pre-existing conditions to be admitted,” he said as authorities targeted Chongqing’s suburbs.

The Chinese government has committed to improving medical services and supplies to rural areas. For example, the authorities have indicated that the Board intends to accelerate the production of medicines against the corona virus.

Beijing has also asked authorities to stockpile medicines and strengthen health services for residents of these areas as vaccination coverage of vulnerable groups increases.

Likewise, it has highlighted the importance of hospitals in these regions working more closely with those in urban areas, which have already experienced spikes in infections.

Meanwhile, in his New Year’s speech, Xi Jinping highlighted the extraordinary efforts of ordinary people, from medical professionals to delivery workers, from community workers to neighbors.
