Republican Kevin McCarthy lost the vote in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. It is the first time in a hundred years that elections for the powerful office require more than one run-up.
It is also the first time in a hundred years that a parliamentary group has refused to approve its candidate. Since the Republicans only have a slim majority in the chamber, McCarthy did not get the necessary number of votes. Specifically, 19 Republicans did not vote for the 57-year-old candidate. All of their votes went to Republican Jim Jordan, who is believed to be a loyal supporter of former President Donald Trump. Jordan had previously nominated McCarthy and appealed to his fellow party members.
He was then himself nominated by MP Matt Gaetz. In the afternoon (local time), it remained unclear how many more votes would be needed to get a new chairman for the chamber. In 1923 nine passes were needed, in 2023 there were two. McCarthy received a total of 202 of the 434 votes cast in the first round, he would have needed 218.
Opponents wanted certain offices
Shortly before the meeting, McCarthy had been belligerent. “I hold the record for the longest speech in plenary,” he had said. The revolt against him, however, came as no surprise. Five party members publicly announced early on that they would vote against the Republican. According to McCarthy, he was told that he would only receive the necessary votes if he provided certain positions and budgets to certain members of the group. “I will always fight to put the American people first — not a few individuals trying to get their way,” said the 57-year-old.
Pastor Nancy Pelosi
Democrat Nancy Pelosi has held the position for the past several years. This is the third most important state in the United States, after the president and vice president. The election is usually a formality – but a lengthy one, as all MPs are individually summoned.
