Priest tells: – Vacation in Rome turned into a pope’s funeral

Date:

Clemens Grill accidentally visited Rome – now he takes part in the Requiem.

Actually, for Propst Clemens Grill from Bruck an der Mur, it should have been a normal holiday with friends in Rome. But with the news of the death of the pope emeritus, everything changed for the Styrian.

“At first I was shocked,” says Clemens Grill, “now I am grateful to be able to pay my last respects to the Pope. He shaped me as a theologian because he tried to unite faith and reason.”

Hundreds of priests
That’s why Grill has signed up to concelebrate — meaning he’ll be one of hundreds of priests celebrating the requiem for Benedict on Thursday. “In a white alb and a red stole,” he explains. As a pastor you can register for this online. “You upload your priest card and log in. The main task is to pray together,” said the pastor. “Together” is an important keyword, because “especially after Corona it is important to experience this community again”.

Incidentally, this is the second time that Grill happens to be in Rome for important events. “During the conclave of 2013, I happened to be here on a pilgrimage. At that moment I saw the white smoke and also the new pope. In that respect, the circle is now complete.”
