At the border in South Styria Spielfeld, the situation regarding refugees in tents has eased. However, there is still uncertainty in Kindberg because of the planned asylum seekers’ accommodation.
The so-called waiting zone at the Styrian-Slovenian border crossing in Spielfeld has been causing a stir for months. Hundreds of refugees often had to stay in tents for weeks at peak times until they were assigned permanent accommodation.
About 30 refugees in tents
While parts of the local population were concerned about the safety of the mass stampede, others criticized the inhumane accommodation and insufficient provision in tents in freezing temperatures. Just before Christmas, a group of asylum seekers even announced a hunger strike, which never happened. How is the situation in Spielfeld today?
“Certainly better. About 30 refugees are currently housed in tents,” the state police said. The local initiative “Border Crossing Spielfeld” also confirms the progress at the request of “Krone”: “What made the situation so positive in the last two months was humanity. Many South Styrians did not want people in their neighborhood to starve and freezing, but wanted to participate.”
Asylum seekers center Kindberg: Meeting should bring more clarity
The asylum issue is currently causing quite a stir in Kindberg in Upper Styria. As reported, the former care center there is being converted into an asylum shelter. There have already been several demonstrations against it and there is great uncertainty among the population.
Next week there should now be a consultation between the responsible federal health care agency and the municipality. “I hope for a constructive conversation that creates a good basis for further action,” said Mayor Christian Sander (SPÖ). He doesn’t expect it to open until February at the earliest. It was originally scheduled for early January.
