Heads of state in Latin America have strongly condemned the attacks by radical Bolsonaro supporters on the government district of the capital Brasilia. At the same time, they pledged their solidarity with the new president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The pope was also concerned about the storming of the presidential palace in Brazil.
“Reprehensible and anti-democratic, the attempted coup by the Brazilian conservatives,” Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador wrote on Twitter on Sunday evening (local time). “Lula is not alone: he has the support of the progressive forces of his country, Mexico, America and the world.”
“The right has failed to keep its pact of non-violence,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro tweeted. All his solidarity goes to Lula and the people of Brazil. Argentine leader Alberto Fernández wrote: “My unconditional support and that of the Argentine people for Lula against this coup attempt.”
“Cowardly Attack on Democracy”
Chilean President Gabriel Boric called it a “cowardly and vile attack on democracy”. Outraged reactions also came from other Latin American countries such as Bolivia, Cuba and Uruguay, as well as from various organizations on the continent.
On Monday, Pope Francis also expressed concern to diplomats at the Vatican about events in Brazil. “I think of the political crises in various countries of the American continent, with their many forms of tension and violence, which exacerbate social conflicts. I think in particular of recent events in Peru and recent hours in Brazil,” said the head of the Catholic Church.
Situation under control after hours
A week after the end of Jair Bolsonaro’s term in office, radical supporters of the right-wing ex-military stormed the government district in the capital Brasilia on Sunday. They invaded Congress, the Supreme Court and the Palácio do Planalto seat of government, causing serious damage there. According to media reports, security forces regained control of the building after several hours.
