Russia today replaced the commander of the forces fighting in Ukraine since February 2022, a position he will take Valery Gerasimovthe current Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Army.
Gerasimov, 67, takes over from General Sergei Surovikinwho was the one who recommended the Russian withdrawal from the northern Ukrainian region of Kherson in November is considered the worst setback suffered by Russian forces in the conflict.
By decree of the Minister of Defence, Sergey ShoiguSurovikin will now hold the position of deputy head of the joint grouping of troops in the zone of the “special military operation”.
Surovikin, who has combat experience in Syria, is already head of the air force. The other deputy head of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine will be Oleg Saliukovcommander of the army, and Alexei KimDeputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces.
Since capturing the city of Lisichansk in early July last year, the Russian army has suffered several setbacks, such as the withdrawal from Kherson, including the regional capital, and from part of the Kharkiv region.
However, at this time, Russian troops and units of the private military company Wagner are fighting on the streets of the city solderin the Donetsk region.
The capture of that stronghold would not only mark Russia’s first major victory in more than half a year, but would also pave the way for an attack on Bakhmut, a key crossroads leading to Ukraine’s main Donbas strongholds.
