Archbishop Georg Gänswein, private secretary of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who died on December 31, apparently tried to facilitate the early publication of the book “Nient’altro che la verità” (Nothing but the Truth) about his life at the side of stop the German pope.
The German weekly magazine Tagespost reported that he had risen to the top of the book publisher Mondadori, which was owned by the family of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Headed by Marina Berlusconi, the eldest daughter of the former prime minister, Mondadori is the parent company of Italian publishing house Piemme, which published Gänswein’s book on Thursday. Neither Berlusconi’s daughter nor co-author Saverio Gaeta could prevent the book from being published. The book was already too deep in the distribution channels.
Book contains details of friendship with Pope Francis
Immediately after Benedict’s death, Piemme distributed individual chapters from the book to selected journalists with a request to report on its contents in advance. The private secretary’s notes contain some details about the relationship between Pope Francis and the emeritus. In comments, these were interpreted as attacks on Francis.
Last week, an open letter from several Italian priests was published urging Gänswein to stop writing the book. Attacks on Francis would “greatly damage the unity of the Church,” argued author Alberto Varinelli.
“As Pope Benedict did when he abdicated, you too carefully and repeatedly examine your conscience before God, and if this text proves to be a conglomeration of resentment and attack, immediately stop printing and selling the book. This would be a noble gesture of a bishop who stands on the side of truth and does not succumb to the temptation of resentment,” Varinelli said.
The book will be published in German in the coming months.
