Terrible mountain accident on Sunday in the Tyrolean Pitztal: a 38-year-old German fell while ice climbing for reasons that have not yet been clarified and suffered fatal injuries. His colleague (34), who also crashed, was able to make an emergency call despite serious injuries.
The alpine drama took place in the Grestal below the Braunschweiger Hütte. According to the police, the two Germans climbed the so-called Schusslersprung icefall. “When the two alpinists abseiled around 4:30 p.m., they fell from the penultimate stand to the foot of the wall for unknown reasons,” the researchers say.
Helicopter rescue impossible
The 38-year-old was fatally injured. “The 34-year-old was seriously injured, but was able to make an emergency call himself.” Due to the bad weather, a helicopter rescue was not possible.
The alerted mountain rescue team had to climb to the seriously injured and rescue him terrestrially. He was taken to the valley and then admitted to Zams Hospital. The victim’s body was recovered Monday morning. Further investigations are underway.
