Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who was arrested on Monday, is seriously ill. Police arrested Italy’s most wanted criminal at a private clinic in Palermo, where he was being treated for an intestinal tumour. She is now also investigating the responsible doctor.
Denaro was treated under false identity at the clinic of La Maddalena. In 2021 he was operated on by surgeons for liver metastases. He has been undergoing chemotherapy ever since. The poor prognosis was “accepted with great dignity” by the patient, reported the head of the medical oncology department, Vittorio Gebbia.
Doctor in the same community as Denaro
The doctor who treated the mafia boss is now also under investigation. Both his home and his practice were searched. The man lives in the same community where Denaro’s hideout was found – Campobello di Mazar.
As reported, this was not far from the western Sicilian city of Trapani, a stronghold of the Cosa Nostra mafia. The carabinieri and prosecutors discovered the hideout on Monday and searched it all night. However, they found no weapons, only designer clothes and perfumes.
At least 50 people killed
Denaro is said to have a penchant for valuable items and to live a life of luxury. The mafia boss has been wanted for 30 years. He is said to have killed at least 50 people, the first at age 18. Today Denaro is 60 years old. His health is serious and the situation has worsened in recent months.
He must continue the treatment, even as a prisoner. In the prison in the Abruzzo town of L’Aquila, where the mafia boss is currently being held, a room is being set up in which he can continue his chemotherapy. The boss was arrested on Monday at the private clinic “La Maddalena” and flown in a military plane from Palermo to Pescara. From here, security forces took him to the maximum security prison in L’Aquila. He is guarded 24 hours a day in a cell of about ten square meters.
Minister of Justice: “Bloodiest phase”
“The last of the great Cosa Nostra bosses has finally been arrested. With this arrest, the bloodiest phase in the fight against the mafia comes to an end. The mafia’s strategy has changed and now we have to be vigilant, because Cosa Nostra knows how to adapt to the new elements of society,” Italy’s Justice Minister Carlo Nordio told Radio 24 on Tuesday.
