After protests against the demolition of the German village of Lützerath and the excavation of lignite, the organization Fridays for Future is now calling for new large-scale climate demonstrations. The next global climate strike is scheduled for March 3.
According to the German climate activist Pauline Brünger, you would then demand a policy that does justice to the climate crisis. “Radical changes across all sectors” and serious implementation of the Paris climate agreement are needed, she explained.
Fridays for Future has called for global climate protests several times in the past. In September 2022, about 12,000 people took to the streets in Vienna.
Lignite controversy
Recently, climate activists had mobilized demonstrators to protest against the demolition of Lützerath. The village, a district of Erkelenz west of Cologne, has been evacuated by the police and will be excavated to get to the underlying brown coal.
