Latvia wants to send more military aid to Ukraine for the fight against Russia. The Baltic EU and NATO country will supply Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, helicopters, machine guns with ammunition and drones to Kiev in the near future. This was announced by Defense Minister Inara Murniece in Riga on Wednesday.
In addition, more intensive training of Ukrainian soldiers in Latvia is planned, it said. The ministry initially gave no further details about the planned arms deliveries, such as quantities or a timetable.
Latvia borders Russia and is one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters. According to its own statements, Riga has provided Kiev with some 300 million euros in military aid since the start of the Russian offensive war in February last year.
Canada supplies armored vehicles
Meanwhile, Canada has pledged 200 Senator armored vehicles to Ukraine. This was announced by Defense Minister Anita Anand during a visit to the Ukrainian capital Kiev. The vehicles are used to transport soldiers and have been requested by Ukraine.
Heavy fighting in eastern Ukraine
There is still heavy fighting on the front in eastern Ukraine. In the past 24 hours, Russian forces had shelled nearly 30 towns there, the general staff said. Ukrainian troops repelled attacks on Bakhmut and the village of Klishchivka in the Donetsk region. Two rockets were reportedly fired at civilian targets in Kramatorsk.
Russia controls more than 18 percent of Ukraine’s territory, including the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which was annexed in 2014. Kiev is counting on the supply of hundreds of main battle tanks from the West for a successful counter-offensive.
