As reported, Russian troops will participate in a joint naval exercise with China and South Africa in February. Moscow has now announced that the Admiral Gorshkov, the only warship to date equipped with new hypersonic cruise missiles, will be sent to the region for this purpose.
“Admiral Gorshkov will proceed to the logistics base in Tartus, Syria, and then participate in joint naval exercises with the Chinese and South African navies,” Russia’s state news agency TASS reported Monday. The agency cited an unidentified defense source. According to Russian information, Zircon cruise missiles can fly nine times faster than sound and have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers.
Admiral Gorshkov belongs to Russia’s Northern Fleet and will be sent on a long voyage to the Atlantic and Indian Oceans to demonstrate Russian naval power. At the beginning of the year, when the hypersonic weapon went into operation, President Vladimir Putin said: “I am sure that such a powerful weapon will reliably protect Russia from external threats and protect the national interests of our country.”
Second joint exercise of the three states
The South African armed forces announced on Thursday that military exercises with Russia and China will take place near the port city of Durban and Richards Bay from February 17 to 27. They aimed to strengthen the already thriving ties between South Africa, Russia and China. The military exercise is the second since 2019 involving the three countries.
