On Tuesday, the train driver of the Raaberbahn had to answer for negligent endangerment at the regional court in Wiener Neustadt. His train derailed on May 9, 2022 on its way from Deutschkreutz to Vienna near Münchendorf (Lower Austria). Two wagons overturned sideways. A young passenger was thrown from the train and trapped. He died as a result of crush trauma. Dozens of passengers were injured.
According to the defendant, the signal circuit was faulty
Hall 152 was filled to the brim and a number of victims followed the process. A broken man presented himself to them. Who has been on sick leave since the accident and has to have surgery again in February. The Hungarian is not only a physical wreck, but also mentally: “I can no longer take the train or drive a car. Almost every night I dream of screaming passengers.’ He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
What happened on that rainy evening in May? It is certain that there was a fault on the route, which is why the points were switched to lead the train over the siding. The driver is informed of this by means of a signal. After the yellow warning signal, the suspect stated that he had braked in accordance with the regulations.
With 145 km/h towards set points
However, the main signal would have flashed green three times. Therefore, the 53-year-old accelerated. At 145 km/h instead of 60 km/h, he steered the train to the set points – the tragedy took its course.
“I’m not 99, but 100 percent sure there were three green lights,” says the man, who has 35 years of professional experience. In his verdict, the judge did not assume a signal error. His sentence was lenient after all: six months in prison, not final.
