At the important Paris long-distance train station Gare de l’Est, train traffic – including to Germany – had to be interrupted all day on Tuesday after a cable fire. Neither long-distance nor regional trains can enter or leave the station, according to the French railway company SNCF. She speaks of an act of sabotage.
According to SNCF, the fire broke out in the middle of the morning rush hour in a signal box about 20 kilometers east of Paris. Individual trains stopped their journey prematurely or were diverted to the nearby Gare du Nord station. All train traffic was therefore halted until the end of the operation, a spokeswoman for the German news agency dpa confirms.
“Intentional act of vandalism”
“Railway workers discovered that 48 cables had been burned in a canal (pictured above) in the Vaires area. It is a deliberate act of vandalism, against which we have filed a lawsuit,” reports Anne-Marie Palmier of rail network operator SNCF Réseau (see video above ). The cables are essential for the operation of the lock.
