A man (41) was trying to avoid eviction from his apartment in Innsbruck last May when he jumped out of a window – carrying his daughter (2) in his arms! The police intervened forcefully. He was now charged with attempted murder.
After his wife reported physical violence, the police turned up in May at the man with the Afghan nationality on the 13th floor of a high-rise building in Innsbruck. The officials said several times that he would now be evicted from the apartment. The 41-year-old reacted unpredictably. “Once he stared into space, then he grinned at us again,” said a police officer. At the same time he babbled: “I’m dead, child dead.” He made it clear that in his culture marriage disputes were impossible to solve with the police, because the man would lose his honor.
Apparent concessions, then escalation
Then he seemed to give in and pretended to put his pants on in the bedroom. Suddenly he ran to the window with his daughter (2) in his arms, opened it and leaned out. “It was clear to me that he wanted to jump with her,” a second police officer said as a witness. He grabbed the man by the waist to prevent the worst. Another of the five officers present grabbed the child and brought it to safety. Two officers were injured during the turbulent scenes.
Just a threat?
When questioned, the suspect tearfully protested that it was all just a threat so the police officers would leave the apartment. The judge immediately corrected that he was under stress because he had never had anything to do with the police. And held the 41-year-old against some past incidents. The Afghan had no previous convictions. When he was first questioned by police in May, he claimed that he was only about to close the tilted window when a police officer suddenly pounced on him from behind.
After a video showing the crime’s reconstruction, prosecutors and lawyers gave their statements and the jury retired to deliberate early that night. The verdict was – as charged – attempted murder. The Afghans were sentenced to 15 years in prison (not final). The police officers received compensation for pain and suffering, but of course it will not be collectable.
