Incredible scenes played out in Traun (Upper Austria) on Wednesday evening. A 17-year-old drug driver without a license stepped on the gas during a traffic check and dragged a police officer 100 meters. According to his own statements, the driver reacted out of fear and panic.
At 8:08 p.m. on Wednesday, the uniformed field service patrol Traun 3 noticed a car in the town of Traun and wanted to subject it to a driver and vehicle check. The patrol car drove behind the car on Kremstalstraße in the direction of Haid and signaled the driver with blue lights and flashing lights to stop to the right.
The driver, a 17-year-old Romanian from the Linz-Land district, repeatedly responded very easily to attempts to stop by slowing down. But he did not stop and continued his journey to the center of Haid. The prescribed speed limit in this area was never exceeded.
Only the red light stopped the driver
Despite further attempts to stop using the stop stick and an announcement over the outside microphone, the driver only stopped on the left turn at the B139/Traunuferstraße intersection due to a red traffic light. The officer in the passenger seat took this opportunity, went to the vehicle and asked the driver to turn left and park the car on Traunuferstrasse. However, the 17-year-old denied this and “played” with the accelerator, giving the impression that he wanted to avoid being stopped again. As a result, the driver was asked to hand over the car key, which he also failed to do.
Fallen on the asphalt
The officer then leaned into the car through the open window to remove the car key. At that moment, the suspect stepped on the accelerator and dragged the officer hanging in the car. Despite loud requests from the officers to stop the car, the suspect drove on unimpeded. After about 100 meters, the officer let go, fell to the asphalt and rolled over several times. The suspect drove on without stopping and fled in the direction of Schulstrasse.
Arrested at home
The policewoman, who watched the process, which took place within a very short time, from the patrol car, gave chase, but lost contact with the getaway car due to traffic. As a result of the immediate search by neighborhood patrols, the suspect was found at his home address and arrested without resistance. The 17-year-old, who does not have a driver’s license, said he acted out of panic and fear. The injured police officer was taken to hospital by ambulance after first aid.
The 17-year-old is charged with defiance of state authority, grievous bodily harm and under the Narcotics Act. The police doctor called to the scene determined that the driver was unfit to drive. Blood collection was refused. Various administrative complaints are reimbursed.
