Violence explodes – Haiti: Officials revolt after police killings

Date:

After the brutal murder of six police officers by criminal gangs, fellow victims and civilians protested against the escalating violence. Some protesters attempted to storm Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s office building.

On Wednesday, criminal gangs attacked the police headquarters in Liancourt in the north of the country, killing six police officers. A police representative reported on the radio that some of the victims had literally been “executed”. That has now led to protests: civilians and colleagues of those killed marched through the capital Port-au-Prince on Thursday and denounced the exploding violence in the Caribbean country.

Many barricades on streets in Port-au-Prince
Some protesters ran onto the runway at the international airport, disrupting flight operations. Many streets in Port-au-Prince were blocked by barricades.

Earlier this week, the UN warned that the situation in Haiti was getting out of hand. Violence by criminal gangs “is on a scale not seen in decades,” UN Special Envoy Helen La Lime said. The government and security forces are unable to control the situation. Given the situation, the special envoy again urged the deployment of an international intervention force.

Number of murders increased by a third within a year
La Lime responded to the presentation of a UN report on the situation in the Caribbean country. Accordingly, the number of murders and kidnappings increased for the fourth year in a row. In 2022, 2183 murders were counted, a third more than the year before. The number of kidnappings doubled in the same period to 1,359, an average of four a day.
