The five agents have been prosecuted by one murder crime. Tire Nichols died three days after the assault at a Memphis hospital from injuries sustained by officers.

For his part, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, has expressed being “deeply hurt” after seeing the video: “I was outraged and deeply hurt when I saw the horrible video of the beating that caused Nichols’ death,” the president said. Biden called Nichols’ parents on Friday to express his condolences.
The trial of the five police officers takes place in the middle of the social debate about police brutality against black people, especially since the murder of police officers from George Floyd in May 2020 in Minneapolis, after which the protest movement known as “Black lives matter‘.
The US police have been singled out by human rights organizations for use disproportionate force against the black population in the country.
According to the organization Mapping Police Violence, nearly a third of all people killed by police in the US in 2021 were African Americans, despite making up only 13% of the country’s population.
