Date:

At least three people have been killed in a record rain in Auckland. One person was in a flooded parking garage, another person died when a landslide hit a house. New Zealand authorities have declared a state of emergency.

They spoke of the “wettest day” since measurements began. The city council warned it could continue to rain into the weekend. Large parts of Auckland were under water on Saturday. Three bodies have been independently found in New Zealand’s largest city, according to police. One person was in a flooded parking garage, another person died when a landslide hit a house.

airport flooded
Police say one more person is missing. As reported, the fire brigade was already in action on Friday with kayaks and jet skis to rescue people from their homes. The suburbs of Kumeu and Albany were particularly hard hit. Parts of the international airport, New Zealand’s largest, were also flooded. No international aircraft will take off until at least Sunday, airport representatives said.

Photos and videos were posted on social media of, among other things, flooded streets, parking lots, houses, parking garages and beaches. The National Research Institute NIWA said that in some parts of the city, 80 percent of rainfall otherwise measured throughout the summer fell within 15 hours.

Prime Minister on site
New Zealand’s new Prime Minister Chris Hipkins flew to Auckland on Saturday. His top priority is to keep the metropolis’ 1.6 million residents safe, he said.
