Almost every tenth woman in Austria has been raped at least once in her life (from the age of 15, source: Statistics Austria). The majority of these cases do not go to court. Krone.at asked women’s advisor Ursula Kussyk why this is so and how the situation in society can be improved. She heads the association Notruf.
The association, which helps girls and women who have experienced sexual violence, provides advice before submitting a complaint and information about the course of any procedure. Victims can also be escorted to court and a free lawyer is available to assist them if necessary. Yet time and time again girls and women decide not to report the crime.
