Heavy snowfall has determined the weather in large parts of Austria since the night. The highest alert level prevailed on Thursday in Salzburg, Styria and Upper Austria. Heavy vehicles got stuck, accidents happened on the snowy roads. The snowfall continues all day. The ÖAMTC called for non-essential travel to be avoided.
Heavy vehicles got stuck on various roads in Styria and chains for trucks were also mandatory – for example on the A2 in the changing area. According to the ÖAMTC, snow chains were also mandatory on the Arlberg motorway (S16), Mühlviertler Strasse in the Freistadt region and Katschberg Strasse – as well as on a large number of federal roads in Upper and Lower Austria.
Trucks got stuck, emergency services needed
Since the morning there have been traffic jams and huge delays in traffic due to the heavy snowfall. There were numerous roadblocks due to stuck trucks: the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) near Ried im Traunkreis, the Westautobahn (A1) near Regau and some other national roads from Tyrol to Lower Austria were affected.
Unfortunately, accidents also determined the traffic situation. For example, on the S6 in Styria in the early hours of the morning, a driver’s car skidded and collided with a shock absorber. The driver sustained injuries.
Snow also fell in many regions in Tyrol, although the extent was limited. Nevertheless, there was an accident near Jenbach in the morning hours, which fortunately only ended in fender damage. The crash still had consequences – namely a total closure of Jenbacher Landesstraße. A diversion had to be set up.
Traffic club urges caution
In any case, snowfall determines the weather pattern for the whole day. More than a meter of fresh snow is expected in the Eastern Alps, according to the storm center. The center of gravity of the precipitation slowly shifts during the day from Upper Styria to the Salzburger Land. There is no easing for the time being. The ÖAMTC therefore urged extreme caution: “Adjust your speed to the weather and road conditions and avoid unnecessary car journeys.”
A slight calming of the weather is not expected until Friday and the snowfall should decrease.
